Community Improvement Awards

The Community Improvement Awards Program is for any resident or group that has volunteered their time to make a part of San Jose more beautiful. You may nominate yourself, your neighborhood group, or any other group whose work qualifies.

GOAL OF THE AWARDS

The Neighborhood Improvement Awards Program was established in 2004 to encourage citizen involvement in adding to the beauty of San Jose. The name was changed to Community Improvement Awards to acknowledge the other categories recognized by this program.

WHO MAY ENTER?

Anyone may nominate a volunteer group or individual who has volunteered his or her time to beautify a property in San Jose. You may nominate a group you area member of, or one whose work you admire and feel is worthy of this award. No paid contractors, or other paid services are eligible.

IS THERE A FEE?

No

WHAT ARE THE AWARDS?

The winners will be presented with a commendation at a City Council meeting and be given a Community Improvement Award plaque.

WHAT IS THE DEADLINE FOR APPLYING?

Applications must be received by Tuesday, March 30, 2010.

HOW DO I APPLY?

Complete the application form and submit it along with photos of the project.

WHO WILL DO THE JUDGING?

The judging panel may consist of representatives from the following groups:

  • The San Jose Redevelopment Agency
  • Local Neighborhood Associations
  • Strong Neighborhood Initiative
  • Local media
  • Local Business Associations
  • Keep San Jose Beautiful Steering Committee

WHAT ARE THE AWARD CATEGORIES?

  1. Landscape Improvement
    This category focuses on the front yard and landscape improvements. The judging will emphasize year-round visual appeal and environmental considerations.
  2. Exterior Residential Improvements
    This category focuses on exterior structural changes or remodeling to single family residences. Judging will emphasize the overall effect of the structural changes.
  3. Historic Structure Improvement
    Homes should be at least 50 years old or of historic significance. Judging will emphasize the extent of restoration or renovation and retention of the original architectural character/style of the front exterior of the home.
  4. Neighborhood Improvement
    This category recognizes group neighborhood improvement projects done in San Jose neighborhoods. The judging will emphasize the overall look of the area, the impact on the area and maintenance projections for the project.
  5. Commercial Improvement
    This special category includes all businesses, including apartment complexes and income properties that have improved the overall look of the front of the property and have positively impacted the adjacent community.
  6. Conservation/ "Green" Improvements
    This category recognizes projects that take into consideration conservation of energy, water, and the environment. The judging will emphasize year round visual appeal and environmental considerations.
